Mount Kangchenjunga (8,586m) lies on the border of Nepal and the Indian state of Sikkim. The region is inhabited mainly by Rai and Limbu people, collectively known as Kirantis, but there are also Sherpas, Tibetans, and Lepchas. Along the trek, you will see the vibrant culture and lifestyle of the Rai and Limbu communities and the Tibetan and Sherpa at higher elevations.
As you traverse the forests, you’ll be captivated by the breathtaking display of rhododendrons (March-April) on the Milke Danda ridge, a sight that is considered one of the most spectacular rhododendron sanctuaries in the world. The area is also home to a variety of Himalayan orchids, wildflowers, and medicinal plants, adding to the natural beauty of the region.
Our journey begins with a trek to the north side of Kanchenjunga Base Camp, Pangpema. Along the way, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Nepal peak and Tent peak, with Kanchenjunga itself coming into view. After Pangpema, we retrace our steps to Ghunsa and cross the Mirgin La to reach the Kanchenjunga south base camp, offering a diverse range of landscapes and experiences.
The best time to trek in this area is from mid-March to mid-April when the rhododendrons, magnolias, and wild orchids are at their peak, and from September to mid-November.
