Introduction to the Mount Himlung Expedition

The Mount Himlung Climbing Itinerary is a 28-day trip to climb the peak in the Nar Phu Valley of the Annapurna region. Himlung is a mountain-climbing adventure for people who want to scale mountains in a beautiful, quiet part of Nepal. You will walk through scenery, learn about the local culture, and climb a challenging, rewarding mountain.

Your mountain-climbing adventure starts in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, with a warm welcome from a representative of Annapurna Treks & Expeditions and escorting you to your designated hotel. Before starting the mountain journey, you will be briefed, introduced to your individual climbing Sherpa guides, re-check your climbing gear, and take an introductory visit to Kathmandu, which is home to 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Journey from Kathmandu to the Mountains

The Mount Himlung climbing trip starts with a drive from Kathmandu. This section of the drive offers views of the Annapurna and Manaslu Himalayas, deep river valleys, midhill landscapes with many settlements, terraced fields, and a diverse cultural landscape. The drive ends at Koto, the trek starting point for the Nar Phu Valley treks and expeditions.

Entering the Nar Phu Valley

From Koto, you will walk through the Nar Phu Valley, a great way to acclimate to the high altitude. This part of the trip takes you through a deep, dense nature valley and helps you adjust to the elevation. The landscape is wild and untouched through forests, pilgrims’ huts, and under waterfalls. The trail also offers scenic views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak.

Exploring Phu Village and Learning About the Local Culture

One of the highlights of the Mount Himlung itinerary is visiting the Tibetan-architectural village of Phu. Phu village remained hidden in this narrow valley for centuries. The village is a cluster of stone houses in Tibetan architecture, and it is a village of pure Buddhist practitioners with prayer walls, monasteries, chortens, stupas, and village entrance gates.

Getting Ready to Climb Mount Himlung

At Phu, you will spend two days visiting the village and hiking around for altitude adaptation before reaching the Himlung Base Camp. This part of the trip combines mountaineering with cultural experiences as you prepare for the ascent.

Setting Up Base Camp for Mount Himlung

The Sherpa climbing guides and kitchen crews will already have set up the Mount Himlung base camp. Therefore, you will feel a usual trekking day, walk from Phu, arrive at the base camp, get a warm welcome from your kitchen and climbing guides, assigned to your sleeping tent, receive your main bag with climbing gears, enjoy a homely comfort at the base camp, gazing at the surrounding mountains. It marks the start of the climbing phase of Mount Himlung.

Climbing Mount Himlung

The itinerary includes a climbing calendar that allows for an acclimatizing rotation climb to ensure the successful ascent of all members. You will have a team of Sherpas and staff to support till the summit and back. The climb is technically moderate yet physically demanding.

The Return Journey Through Nar Phu Valley

After the Himlung climb, you will retrace your route through the Nar Phu Valley to Koto, then drive to Kathmandu, enjoying the lush scenery and warmth of the lowlands after several days in severe Himalayan cold and dry conditions.

Why Choose Mount Himlung for Your Expedition?

A Great Balance of Challenge and Safety

Mount Himlung is one of the moderate 7-thousand-meter Himalayan expeditions offering a Great Balance of Challenge and Safety. It is comparatively safer, offers the experience of the Himalayan altitude, and introduces one to the severity of the Himalayan weather systems. The 7-thousand-climbing experience is also required for Everest climbers starting in 2027. In short, Himlung offers a unique and unforgettable climbing experience for all, whether they are an amateur climber, preparing for the major 8-thousanders, or just starting on several 7-thousanders.
