The Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek starts with your arrival in Kathmandu and a warm traditional welcome. The second day is for a jet-lag shake and a guided tour of Kathmandu, while the agency issues special permits for the Lower Dolpo region. Then you can start your journey to the Himalayas for the Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek.
Normally, the third day starts your adventure with a short domestic flight to Nepalgunj. The view from the plane is beautiful with Langtang, Manaslu, Annapurna, and the Dhaulagiri mountain range. Upon reaching Nepalgunj, you will learn how vast Nepal’s geographical diversity is. The cold mountains give way to the hottest lowlands of Nepalgunj, marking the beginning of the distinct geographical and atmospheric shifts of your Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek.
The Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek is suitable for travellers with basic trekking experience who want to learn about the remote local culture and the western part of Nepal’s Himalayan range.
From Nepalgunj, you will enjoy an exciting flight to Juphal, at 2,475 meters above sea level. Juphal is the starting point of the Lower Dolpo region. At Juphal, you will meet your trekking crew, who arrive a couple of days before to organize the logistics for the Lower Dolpo trek. After landing at Juphal and a welcoming breakfast from your mobile kitchen crew, you will start walking down to the farms and villages near the Bheri River, then go to Roop Ghar for the first overnight stop in the trek into Dolpo.
This short first-day walk will offer an insight into what the Dolpo Circuit Trek will be like. You will see the scenery, the local culture, and the big mountains.
The following days of trekking will take you deeper into the Himalayan valleys. You will follow the Suli Gad River as it enters Shey Phoksundo National Park. Shey Phoksundo is a national park in Nepal. The trekking trail winds through pine forests, tiny settlements, waterfalls, and river valleys. The villages along the trail are traditional and have changed little over the decades. The people there still practice their centuries-old way of life. The village is mostly composed of stone houses, Buddhist prayer flags, Hindu temples, and large, mani-etched sacred walls throughout the lower Dolpo Circuit Trek.
The Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek offers one of the most amazing sights: the beautiful Phoksundo Lake, at 3,640 meters. The water of Phoksundo Lake is a deep blue in a deep Himalayan Valley, adorned by dense forest on high cliffs, crowned by snow-capped mountains. The Dolpo Circuit Trek also features Nepal’s tallest waterfall, 330 meters high, fed by Phoksundo Lake, offering the grandest waterfall scene.
An excellent acclimatization day in Ringmo village will enable the trekkers to visit the old Bon-po monastery, Pal Sentan Thasoon Chholing Gompa. It is a religious site that demonstrates the region’s strong Bon tradition, an ancient shamanistic practice that predates Tibetan Buddhism. As you go about your Dolpo Circuit Trek, you will see prayer ceremonies, the turning of prayer wheels, and cultural practices that define Dolpo and its anciency.
The second phase of the Dolpo Circuit Trek takes you through two high-altitude passes: Bagala La (5,200m) and Numila La (5,320m). These crossings are both persevering and challenging yet offer trekkers incredible panoramic views. The giant snow-capped Himalayan ranges enclose vast, windswept Himalayan plateaus linking to the Tibetan highlands. The scenery also changes dramatically to orange, brown, and gold, with rough and barren Himalayan terrain.
Passing through these passes leads to the culturally rich Tarap Valley, one of the highest-altitude human settlements in the world. Dho and the neighboring villages offer interesting insights into the syncretism of Bon-Po and Tibetan Buddhism. The region’s spiritual and ancient legacy is evident in major chortens, large prayer wheels filled with hand-written prayers on birch bark and wrapped in leather, and centuries-old monasteries.
The third part of the trek, beyond Tarap Valley, leads down the Tarap Khola ravine. The Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek trail then descends straight to Tarakot, an ancient trading post, while the salt trade between Nepal and Tibet was vital.
The last phase of the trek follows the Barbung Khola, leading to Dunai and Juphal. Here, you will end the Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek adventure with an emotional farewell to your trekking crew and to Dolpo. Land back in Kathmandu, taking an early morning flight to Nepalgunj and a connecting flight to Kathmandu, where you will spend another 2 nights, followed by a last day guided tour of Kathmandu Valley and a farewell feast!
The Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek is less trekked. The Lower Dolpo Circuit is still remote from its capital. Lower Dolpo Circuit offers glimpses of ancient Nepal. The Lower Dolpo Circuit trek is different from others due to:
