Unlike the busier Lukla to Everest base Camp route, the Jiri to Phaplu Trek via Peekye (Pike) Peak offers deeper cultural encounters in the lower Solu–Khumbu region. Trekkers can visit authentic Sherpa villages, several monasteries, including the largest Nyingmapa monastery at Thupten Chholing, the widest panoramic views of the Himalayas from Peekye (Pike) Peak, and the spiritual serenity of Dudh Kunda Lake. It is a perfect blend of history, nature, spirituality, and ethnic and travellers’ traditions.
Your journey begins in Kathmandu with a warm traditional welcome from Annapurna Treks & Expeditions. After arrival, you will have a briefing about the Jiri to Phaplu Trek, meet your guide, and prepare for the adventure ahead. The second day is usually for jet lag, so we combine it with a guided tour of the Kathmandu Valley, which is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Kathmandu is known for its vibrant streets, and travelers experience the cultural atmosphere while rambling around.
The trekking adventure starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Jiri. The road journey offers beautiful views of terraced hills, rivers, rural settlements, and distant Himalayan landscapes. Jiri, known as the historic gateway to Everest, was once the only starting point for treks into the Everest region, including the Jiri to Phaplu Trek, and connects you to the legacy of early mountaineering expeditions.
From Jiri, the trail gradually ascends and descends through charming villages such as Shivalaya and Deurali. The path passes through terraced farmlands, suspension bridges, pine forests, and rhododendron woodlands.
As you continue the Jiri to Phaplu Trek, you will experience authentic rural life, observe traditional farming practices, and interact with friendly local communities, making the journey culturally enriching.
Junbesi, a small Sherpa village, is one of the cultural and spiritual hubs of the Solu region and remains a major highlight of the Jiri to Phaplu Trek. At Junbesi, you will explore ancient monasteries, traditional stone houses, and prayer-flag-lined pathways.
A visit to Thubten Chöling Monastery provides insight into Buddhist spiritual life. You may observe monks performing daily rituals, people retired due to their age learning and meditating in the spiritual peace, and experience the peaceful Himalayan atmosphere that defines this classic Everest trail.
One of the most rewarding moments of the Jiri to Phaplu Trek is reaching Peekye (Pike) Peak. The early morning hike to the summit offers an unforgettable sunrise over the Himalayan range, stretching from Kanchenjunga to the east of Nepal and Dhaulagiri to the west.
From the top, panoramic views stretch across Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, and the Annapurna range. The scenery is breathtaking and remains one of the finest viewpoints in Nepal.
The trek continues toward the sacred Dudh Kunda Lake. The trail becomes more alpine and remote as you move through high pastures and glacial landscapes.
Dudh Kunda, meaning “Milky Lake,” is a spiritual pilgrimage site surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. Visiting this sacred lake during the Jiri to Phaplu Trek offers a unique combination of spiritual reflection and natural beauty.
After visiting Dudh Kunda, the sacred Himalayan Milky Lake, the trail retraces its route to Taksindu and Ringmo village, offering a great walk through primitive forests. From Ringmo, you will encounter Sherpa settlements and monasteries until Phaplu. This final section allows you to reflect on the diverse landscapes, cultural richness, and panoramic mountain views experienced along the way.
From Phaplu, you will return to Kathmandu, concluding your classic Himalayan adventure, the Jiri to Phaplu via sacred Peekye (Pike) Peak and sacred Dudh Kunda (Milky Lake).
Before departure, we take you on a guided tour of Kathmandu’s heritage sites, including Pashupatinath Temple, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, and Boudhanath Stupa.
