Janakpurdham or Janaki Temple
Janakpur, more commonly Janakpurdham, is the administrative headquarters of the Dhanusa District of the Janakpur Zone in Nepal. It is located 400 kilometres south-east of Kathmandu bordering with India.
This city is of the ancient Maithili culture with its language and script. Janakpur is said to be the birthplace of Sita, a Hindu goddess, and believed to be the site of her wedding with Ram, a Hindu god. King Janak is supposed to have found the baby Sita in a furrow of a field; he took the child home and raised. For her wedding, the king Janak announced that she should be wed by whoever can string the divine bow in the palace. And this contest was won by Ram, a prince from Ayodhya, which make the site an important site for Hindus pilgrimage.
The impressive Janaki Mandir, built in the year 1911 by Queen Brisabhanu Kunwar, dominates this city cetre. Nau Lakha Mandir also knows the temple; the myth says the construction cost was 9-lakh, at that time. The temple is one of the biggest in the country.
The other temple in the site is the Ram Mandir, built by Amar Singh, a brave & mighty Gorkhali Soldier. Other famous sites of interest visit are Vivah Mandap, Barah Bigah, Ratna Sagar Temple, Bihar Kund and Agni Kund, and the ancient Bibah Mandap of Ram & Sita etc.
